If we "displace close to the equivalent amount that we import from the mideast", what would this accomplish with respect to our dependence on mideast oil? Would we enact laws that prohibit one drop of mideast oil from being imported by any company? And if we did that, what would that accomplish? We would be constraining companies that import oil, and in effect bumping up the price due to this inefficiency. And we would still be dependent on mideast oil--if the mideast supply becomes interrupted, the world price goes up, and we will never be insulated from such an effect.
