I think if we try to subdue Baghdad we're not going to be able to accomplish any of what you suggest might constitute a win. I can't imagine trying to subdue an antagonistic city the size of the core of the Los Angeles basin. I don't think that's every been tried, and I think if we do try it, the result could be truly horrendous. Of course there is always the chance things will go well, but the odds are so against it, I think that once we go into Baghdad as a subduing force any chance of winning the battle quickly, not pissing off the entire world, having the Iraqis end up better off, having the region not erupt, is over. Other countries WILL follow our example of preemptive war- it's just too tempting, I think. Of course we will protest when those other countries follow our example- no doubt we will say "Do as we say, not as we do". That's always SO effective.
