"but I wonder if anyone over time has consistently made money doing stocks of this ilk"

Oh, yeah...anybody who shorted these at ANY time in the past year or more!

So either they all go BK (I doubt), or some will emerge at much more reasonable valuations...question is which ones.

And I would have thought that RRI was a bellweather in this distressed area. If they can't refi on sensible terms, then I don't see how the weaker ones will..fB

Ron, as one who has taken hits on EXDS, Adelphia, and plenty of others, I couldn't agree with you more. I have avoided KM, UAL, U, AMR, etc. I do feel that RRI and others of their ilk in the IPP sector are a different situtaion than the others you mentioned. a small amount of risk money in this sector not out of line. opbviously trading them, or shorting them from higher up, is a better play as things have unfolded. larry

>>>> but maybe I am just an old conservative fart who hasn't a clue

well ... ol son ..
this remark of yours has put me in mind of a story I heard a looooooong time ago ....

fellow gets a job going door to door selling brushes
his days are sometimes long, and sometimes not profitable
however, sometimes interesting things happen

after being rebuffed in five consecutive approaches he rings the bell for the sixth time
and
a verrrrrrrry young kid opens the door ...

our intrepid salesman immediately inquires
"good morning, sir, is your mother at home"

and the kid responds
"nope, Mister -- she's at work down at the whorehou-e"

... needless to say, our guy is completely taken aback, and all he can stammer is
"HUH ... whorehou-e ... wellllllll I'm a sonofabeech"

and the quickasawink response from the kid is

"well, so am I mister, but damned if I go around knocking on doors telling people about it" .......

so ...
you can see why this story was brought to mind by your remarks .... hehehehehehe
