Kirk has it right. Since the eco-nuts made it so politically impossible to build more nuclear power plants they are the ones who have forced our dependence on oil and ME oil will always be a part of that because of simple economics.

Every form of energy has a cost of extraction, a certain energy content and a practical limit to how much we can obtain. In each case it makes sense to maximize the amount of work we can get done while at the same time minimizing the economic and environmental impact. The technology does not exist today that can outperform oil in this respect.

Just because your lightweight hybrid gets better mileage doesn't mean it does as much work as a regular car. If it weighs half as much as a regular car it does half the work and it makes perfect sense that it should use half the fuel. That said, I think it does have it's merit in certain situations but not for everyone.

If only cold fusion had worked out. Unfortunately, it was just another case of bad science. As was the EV which CARB finally agreed didn't make so much sense after some other smarter people were able to convince them that it simply shifted the problem to the power plants. Which, to a large degree, burn oil because eco-nuts are a paranoid bunch.
