(COMTEX) B: Banks win as more pay bills online

Mar 31, 2003 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Research by
ACNielsen.consult shows Australian banks are using the Internet to increase
market share. A study shows that, for those connected to the Internet, it has
become the preferred method for paying bills, and that banks have reaped most of
the benefits. Of Internet users, 68% used the Internet to pay bills, with 89% of
those using their bank's web site. Around 67% of the bank web site users made
use of a cheque or savings account. Credit cards were more used by those who
paid bills via the biller's web site. According to a senior analyst with
ACNielsen.consult, James Meldrum, the increased Internet banking usage was in
line with a general trend for people to use their own funds, rather than rely on
a credit card. The 18-to-24-year-old age group was over-represented in those
paying bills online. The two most popular online banks were the Commonwealth
Bank of Australia and the National Australia Bank.
