In a nutshell, little to gain and a whole lot to lose.

I don't buy the notion that Saddam was much of a risk to us, an evil SOB to be sure, but not much risk to us in the grand scheme of things. Had the UN wanted to take him on for his refusal to honor the terms of his agreements with them, I would have been on board. I found incredible hubris in our blowing off the rest of the world and taking him on ourselves, not to mention the moral question of doing so and the terrible precedent it sets. And lastly, I thought the plan was incredibly dismissive of the costs and the risks.

Still think so. Just don't see any way out that would be smarter than going forward.
