Salon used to have money troubles, they're hanging in there. And if you watch Salon's editorials carefully, you'll see the old style liberal thinking has been gradually going out of style except for a few hold-outs. Salon is by any definition a liberal web news service but it's surprisingly moderate these days, scolding anti-war protests, etc., championing bi-partisanship in various ways. So what's liberal really isn't anymore. It's a hybrid progressive movement embracing the best of liberalism (what works well only) and new common sense moderate ideas. In short, Clinton changed the left, 9-11 changed it again and Kerry will change it even more. The Democratic party is on the verge of becoming the national unity party, fighting for people and small business against the big fat cat interests and social right-wingers.

Kerry will win over this large melange as his base, a cross-section including all liberals and Democrats, independents, moderates and free-thinking moderate-conservative traditionalists. His strong veterans support all cuts right across party and philosophical lines.
