France bullying the rest of Europe into "give me what I want or I'll break up EU" does more than damage to France. People universally resent that kind of treatment from anyone. And just as we are now reaping what we sowed long ago, so will France.

As to the issue of Bush doing damage, there is an old (and historically accurate?) story about a Caliph and his Vizier walking in the garden. They were having a good time and saw a good looking apple. So the Caliph asks the Vizier to pick it. The Vizier climbs on top of Caliph's shoulders, steps on his head to reach the apple, and then they both share and enjoy it. They call the gardener to appreciate his good work. The gardener, belonging to the Vizier's clan, asks for written document attesting that he has no relations to that clan. This was a surprising request but they had promised to make him happy and give it to him. Few years later the Caliph orders the massacre of every member of Vizier's clan. The gardener is spared but brought to the Caliph for questioning. When asked how he knew this would happen even before the Caliph did, he answered, "a fountain that reaches its peak topples over. I knew that Vizier could never go any higher after being allowed to step over his majesty's head".

As I see it, after reading various quotes from PNAC, one can't really get any higher than feeling comfortable to claim we can do whatever we want and even in matters that do not concern US, we will interfere to prevent anyone getting stronger than what they already are. So I see this as the beginning of the end, no matter how the war goes.
