It's not, IMO, merely paying a high price to oust Saddam.

it's being willling to pay a high price to prove the credibility of the American military threat and the will of the American people. If we back off here, we're done as a world power. If we show that we are willling to take casualties to carry out the campaigns we commit to, the fear of our militarygoes up substantially, and it will be very much a matter of "when America talks, people listen."
