especially as he, [Judt] strays very casually onto turf that he isn't an expert in.

Perfect FADG fodder. Invite him to post.

I would be much less categorical or dismissive than he is, and I think to myself, where does he get off being so snippy?"

He's even got the right attitutde. Definitely a prospect.

Thanks for the quickie reviews.

I'm reading the Mandelbaum now, but reading only sections that interest me. The writing style drags so I find I have to care a great deal about the argument to keep going; but then find the argument structured at a more abstract level than can sustain interest. So, all in all, not helpful yet.

The Zakaria is on reserve at the library. I skimmed it today at the bookstore and thought it lightweight relative to the Mandelbaum. But will reserve serious judgment until I have time to actually read it.

Kupchan is also on reserve.

I found the original Kagan article too tendentious, too much the neocon ideologue for my present tastes. But, given his stuff shows up on a lot of screens, I've put the book on reserve. Don't expect to be surprised but you never can tell.

Oh, yes, Huntington is in the pile to be read as well. It just seems to stay third on the list.

Thanks again.
