The reason that Rumsfeld thought that the Iraqi military would turn on their leadership without a fight is because he knows the real feelings of the U.S. military towards his leadership.

Patron, good stuff, but some of it is stereotypical military bs. That doesn't mean there isn't a lot of truth, but here are a few observations: 1. No US commander has ever gone to battle with everything he wanted. 2. They talk about Rum-Dumb deriding and challenging subordinates. That is the military style of command. Chit rolls downhill. Generals don't like it. Neither do buck Privates. 3. Cities are harder to take than deserts, especially if you don't want to hurt civilians. Lizards have few supporters in the UN. <g> 4. Our overwhelming air superiority can only accomplish so much. Shock and awe was a joke, and simply displays a lack of respect for our enemy. That's like the school bully making a muscle and expecting the smaller kid to run away crying. Arabs are fighters. They usually have lousy equipment and leadership, but they don't lack courage. All those virgins in heaven are waiting for them. 5. Even those who don't like SadMan hate us as much or more.

That being said, surrounding yourself with yes men is what helped get Hitler in trouble, and I hope Rummy wakes up.
