IDT Samples Industry's First Network Search Engines with a Fully Integrated Interface for AMCC Network Processors

Monday March 31, 7:45 am ET

Comprehensive Solution Includes NSEs with Integrated XSC Interface and Hardware Development Kit that Speeds Time to Market and Increases System Performance

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 31, 2003-- IDT(TM) (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.; Nasdaq: IDTI), a leading communications IC company and the leading provider of network search engines (NSEs), today introduced the industry's first family of NSEs with an integrated XSC interface for network processor units (NPUs) from AMCC. Offering the industry's largest database in a single device with an integrated XSC interface, the new 256Kx36 devices provide up to four integrated XSC ports and enable 256,000 route table entries. Additionally, the NSEs operate at 104 MHz, making them the highest-speed search engines available for AMCC NPUs. IDT also provides designers with system-level solutions that include a hardware development kit (HDK) with development boards that interface directly to AMCC's NPU development environment and a comprehensive software development kit (SDK). Together, the IDT HDK and SDK enable designers to reduce time to market and enhance overall system performance for a range of communications applications including core, edge, metro and access routers.

The new NSEs deliver advanced features to accelerate packet processing and offload search functions from the NPU, providing the headroom for the NPU to perform tasks such as traffic management, security and accounting that can be then used in a system environment to implement quality of service and specialized billing features. The IDT NSEs include a set of Dynamic Database Management(TM) features and sophisticated instruction capabilities that result in significant power savings and improved performance at up to OC-192 data rates.

"IDT has developed a family of NSEs that is ideal for both current and future system designs based on our industry-leading network processors," said Jeff Cashen, vice president and general manager of AMCC's switching and network processing division. "Combined with our network processors, these solutions deliver optimized performance for a number of our more demanding wide area networking applications."

The new NSEs allow up to 16 different databases per device. In addition, designers can cascade up to eight separate NSE devices to create a single 2Mx36 database. Flexible management of these multiple network search engines is delivered by providing a single interface from the database to the NPU, regardless of the number of NSE devices used. To allow greater architectural flexibility, the new NSE devices also provide separate SRAM and host ports that are asynchronous to the XSC ports.

"As the leading provider of network search engines, we felt it was important to team with AMCC, a recognized leader of network processors, to deliver compatible hardware, software and development solutions to accelerate time to market and increase reliability for our customers," stated Scott Sarnikowski, vice president and co-general manager of the IDT IP co-processor division. "The four integrated ports of our NSE devices uniquely provide customers with the flexibility to interface to up to four AMCC NPUs concurrently. In addition, the monolithic design of the NSEs provides board savings over alternative solutions and delivers greater reliability, increased performance and power advantages to our customers."

Development Platform and Software Support

IDT offers a full suite of software and hardware development tools to speed time to market, reduce development costs and increase overall system performance. The company's new NSE development boards are designed to fit within AMCC's nP7250 Workbench and nP340X Workbench development platforms. In addition to the new development boards, IDT offers an SDK for the AMCC nP7250 nPsoft Workshop and nP340X nPsoft Workshop development environment. Included among the IDT SDK run-time support tools are a data plane macro (DPM) library conforming to the AMCC nPkernel and production-quality, control-plane initialization and management and searching (IMS) software conforming to AMCC's Common Coprocessor API (CoCoA) 2.0 API specification. The IDT SDK also includes a system-level, data accurate architecture model for the AMCC development environment.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the NSEs with integrated XSC interface begins at $210 in 10,000-unit quantities. All of the NSE configurations are sampling now with production quantities available in Q2CY03. The new NSE development boards will be available in 2Q03 and are individually priced at $2,200. Download a high-resolution product image at www10.idt.com:81/pressroom/imagebank/products.cfm. IDT IP Co-Processor Solutions

IDT provides a family of IP co-processor solutions, including industry-leading network search engines and content inspection engines that accelerate packet processing and enable intelligent application management in next-generation networking equipment. IDT is recognized by RHK, Inc. and International Data Corporation (IDC) as the technology leader, and as the volume shipment leader of network search engines. Based on the integration of content addressable memory (CAM) and high-performance logic, the IDT NSEs support NPUs and ASICs to accelerate packet classification and forwarding in core, metro and access networks. IDT offers the industry's highest-performance NSE operating at up to 250 MHz, the first NSE with an integrated LA-1 interface and was the first vendor to introduce search widths up to 576 bits. The IDT NSE portfolio includes custom versions for Cisco Systems, as well as devices with general-purpose and glue-less interfaces to network processors. The IDT 256Kx36 (128Kx72) NSE received the EDN Top 100 Products Award of 2002.

The IDT content inspection engines are capable of parsing and classifying data up to Layer 7, a functionality that when coupled with the NSEs, allows for inspection of content in both the packet header and payload, resulting in more intelligent packet processing at wire speed. IDT is an active NPF member and contributor to NPF and the LA interface definition and serves as chairman of the board. More information about the NPF can be found at www.npforum.org.
