President Clinton didn't do anything more than pose a token opposition to the Republican proposals. Look at the welfare reform Act. He was more enthusiastic about its passing than even the Republicans.

Lots of politicians 'talk a good game' about fiscal prudence, balanced budgets, smaller government... but few deliver the goods. (Reagan ran twice promising balanced budgets and national debt reduction, so did Bush I... but neither ever delivered that in any budget over 12 years.)

For example, Bush II is spending like a drunken sailor... he is shaping up to be the most profligate deficit spender since the LAST Texas President: LBJ.

(In Bush's first two years, his spending is well over $100 Billion more than the last two Clinton years... and Clinton was no tightwad.)
