I disagree and have on SI with boilerplate liberalism on many points. And if you think I've changed my politics recently, or "now," you're also wrong. You just haven't paid attention. There is a big difference between you and me on this war. I know I don't know what in the long run (in the war as opposed to in the battle the Iraqi invasion actually is) would be best for America, including for those who will fight our battles, and you "know" you do. (Note the quotes.) The question of whether supporting the war is the same as supporting those who are being sent to fight it, and may be sent to fight others, is also complicated. Emotional, and complicated. Criticizing the policies that elected war is not the same as disrespecting the bravery and sacrifice of those who are risking, or giving, their lives. For example: It's logically possible that the points made by the war critics will make an impression on those who will make the difference in the next election, and Bush will be turned out of office for someone with a different approach. It's uncomfortable to even think of that while people are dying, but you may be sure there are those on both sides doing so. And it's part of what the free exchange of ideas is for -- the right to try and persuade your fellow voters, the electorate; and of course on a thread devoted to GWB, I can see one motivation right there for Bush fans wanting to shut up his critics, and a motivation for Bush detractors to keep up what for some of them may be, at this point, mainly a campaign to get a new president. It's called democracy, and yes, it would be more comfortable for the soldiers at the front lines to think everyone thought they were part of a noble effort. But in fact everyone doesn't, and some of them, like Colonel Wright, are good and loyal Americans. Heroes themselves, even. And they have a right to express their views and try to persuade others to them.
