I don't know anyone here-so suffice it to say that E POSTS like an idiot.

And E is claiming stupidity as an alternative to anti-Americanism.

For the lefties on this thread-the probability of the former is tremendous.

The USA is at war with a despot who killed 3000 people on 91101. The armed forces are making outstanding progress, and will create a safer and more liveable world by their sacrifice.

The left wing "establishment" is NOT at war with this despot, nor any other foreign entity that was involved with 91101, or any future act that may be attempted. That is because they are too busy being AT WAR WITH GEORGE BUSH.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to be a REASONABLE citizen of the USA WITHOUT being thoroughly OFFENDED by their attitude.

Since that attitude has been sustained for over 30 years, any TOLERANCE of it must necessarily be considered NEGLIGENCE of the duty of a citizen.

One can only hope that the 80% of Americans who ARE trying to be diligent citizens during this war WILL REMEMBER, and finally put a STOP to the Marxist/Leninist left's CRUSADE against America.

The armed forces are putting it on the line to make us ALL safe. The VERY LEAST we can do is make sure they don't come home to the same reception that their fathers experienced after Vietnam.

That is respect, and-in the collective-it is not always something our people have found the courage for...

Well, it's nice that you don't think I'm an idiot, but if you think I was ever a "classic Clinton liberal" you've got me mixed up with somebody else entirely, Laz.

I disagree and have on SI with boilerplate liberalism on many points. And if you think I've changed my politics recently, or "now," you're also wrong. You just haven't paid attention.

There is a big difference between you and me on this war. I know I don't know what in the long run (in the war as opposed to in the battle the Iraqi invasion actually is) would be best for America, including for those who will fight our battles, and you "know" you do. (Note the quotes.)

The question of whether supporting the war is the same as supporting those who are being sent to fight it, and may be sent to fight others, is also complicated. Emotional, and complicated. Criticizing the policies that elected war is not the same as disrespecting the bravery and sacrifice of those who are risking, or giving, their lives.

For example: It's logically possible that the points made by the war critics will make an impression on those who will make the difference in the next election, and Bush will be turned out of office for someone with a different approach.

It's uncomfortable to even think of that while people are dying, but you may be sure there are those on both sides doing so. And it's part of what the free exchange of ideas is for-- the right to try and persuade your fellow voters, the electorate; and of course on a thread devoted to GWB, I can see one motivation right there for Bush fans wanting to shut up his critics, and a motivation for Bush detractors to keep up what for some of them may be, at this point, mainly a campaign to get a new president.

It's called democracy, and yes, it would be more comfortable for the soldiers at the front lines to think everyone thought they were part of a noble effort. But in fact everyone doesn't, and some of them, like Colonel Wright, are good and loyal Americans. Heroes themselves, even.

And they have a right to express their views and try to persuade others to them.
