Those were the years, when in a heartfelt romantic song, they could put in the sound effect of thunder or play the xylophone to indicate rain drops, without any sort of self-consciousness at all.

Dion de Muci was great when his girl was running around. He made you believe it. Hate cheating women. All girls name Sue. Just glare at them. They go out with other guys.

It's a sort of blues, the unabashed innocence of pop in the 60's. The imitation of Sha-na-na did not grab you at all the same way. There is nothing like a fellow with two pounds of slicked back hair, and a 1 foot wide velvet lapel sequined suit with pants legs 3 inches above the ankles singing in a 2 octave falsetto through, his, at that time mysteriously, one remaining nostril, "I was cryin', dyin' "

"I met him at the laundromat.. no do tell... he was kinda big and strong .... We get the picture .. He was ... the ... leader of the pack.. rrrrrr rrrrrr rrrrrrr" (Norton Atlas revs 9,000.)

Serious stuff. Jim Dandy to the Rescue. Jim Dandy in a Submarine. Jim Dandy on a Mountain top. Pounding bass relieved headaches better than excedrin. Barry Gordy got Motown by theft.

Don't Ever Be Ashamed.

I would put Lavern Baker up against Celine Dionne anyday.

But not Mirelle Matheiu. Man that girl could sing. Everybody else was just talking. Well, maybe Ella Fitzgerald sang a bit.

There is one form of music that to this day is vastly underrated and that is the blues as professed by the black musicians of Detroit, Chicago, New Orleans, and St. Louis, from the 20's to the 60's. As far as putting resolution to emotion and coming out positive in feeling, and believable, no one can beat simple lyrics like John Lee Hooker, when he sings, "Ba--aaa--by." You know exactly what he meant. It ain't no complaint. If you think so, you are not listening with the right mind. The blues were not meant, nor do I think was any song meant to be something to inspire any sort of sadness. It is all meant to affirm, and release emotion to the side of contentment or well, joy. Getting back into it, not crying about it, is what it is all about.
