Kayaker, re "[rkral edit: Chinese handset manufacturers] give assurances to purchase their requirements of CDMA Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) from QUALCOMM as long as QUALCOMM''s ASICs are competitive in price and function ... "

OK. Let's assume a Chinese manufacturer determines that QCOM *is not competitive* in price and function, so they use a non-QCOM CDMA chip(set).

Whether the determination is true or not, I think the royalty rate for domestic sales then changes from 2.75% to 5.25%.

For anyone who doesn't read the other thread...

My email correspondence today with Bill Davidson, Qualcomm IR.

My Question:

Re: QUALCOMM and Siemens Modify Existing Licensing Agreement -- August 26, 2002 qualcomm.com

In the above press release, it is not clear to me that Siemens has agreed to pay royalties for TD-SCDMA handsets. Can you tell me if the agreement with Siemens specifically covers royalties on TD-SCDMA handsets?

His Answer:

Indeed it does.

South Korea delays wireless Internet decision due to U.S. pressure

by Jeffrey Silva
Jan. 20, 2004 1:00 PM EST

WASHINGTON—The Bush administration today confirmed South Korea will delay until June a decision to mandate a government-backed wireless Internet standard benefiting domestic firms at the expense of San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc. and others, a development that comes in response to U.S. pressure and in advance of a scheduled decision in Seoul later this week on other technical rules viewed by American officials and industry as protectionist....
