I think the story Sig was talking about was one about AQ personnel in Basra. Could be wrong - but I saw such a story but have lost it now.

Nope, it wasn't the Kurds we're allied with which were tied up in AQ. In fact, Ansar al-Islam was the enemy of the Kurdish groups we're allied with. Like paul philip said in the middle post below - ""The Kurds", "The Sunni" and "The Shiite" are no longer sufficient descriptors."
