I think the story Sig was talking about was one about AQ personnel in Basra. Could be wrong - but I saw such a story but have lost it now. Re. A person who looks into this a little would see that these people are your new friends the Kurds, and the group is in the area they have controlled for 10 years. Nope, it wasn't the Kurds we're allied with which were tied up in AQ. In fact, Ansar al-Islam was the enemy of the Kurdish groups we're allied with.
