I agree with what you're implying - this is a matter of life/death for our soldiers are risking their lives, so their lives are a higher priority than freedom of speech.

But you're assuming communicating is bad. In Vietnam, I read they did exactly what you indirectly suggest (reporters should report we are winning) when it turned out that actually hurt the war. By knowing there's an issue, the USA can regroup and also gain the support for more resources to do so.

I think companies are more open about criticism than what you give them credit for, especially in high-tech. A person needs a critic in order to do the right thing and keep on ones toes.
