Our experience in Eastern Europe was that the Communists might get voted in, but, like the Nazis, they would ensure that they were not voted out. Anyone favoring democracy could not wish that the Communists would come to power. That is why socialists like George Orwell, Sidney Hook, and Arthur Koestler became strongly anti- Communist. Additionally, liberal democracy always entails a respect for minority rights, and the protection of civil liberties. In Western Socialist Parties, this has generally meant a meliorist approach to social change, instead of engaging in naked class warfare. Otherwise, democracy merely becomes mob rule, and the affluent are without legal protection. The upshot is that we were trying to save liberal democracy, instead of letting those who would trample civil liberties, and engage in Stalinist spoofs of elections, come to power. Besides, the Soviets were funding the Western Communist parties, we were merely balancing out the equation......
