I agree with you that there is no analysis out there of relative benefits (or disadvantages) of stopping the war now rather than carrying it out to the end. I would be interested to participate in your musings on the subject.

Re "inertia" - Granted that it exists and is a powerful source in movements of such force and mass, the issue is whether or not it we should make the effort, no matter how large, to change it. You are driving on the highway in a cabriolet and your stuff starts flying off. The decision to overcome the inertia, pull over, close the top of the car so more stuff don't fly off, and look for the stuff that already flew away (although you might not be able to find them) depends on how valuable they are (were) for you, and how you see the risk of more stuff flying off as you continue on the highway.

You read that into my message. I mentioned the "mad Islamists who would attack us."

Sorry about that. It looked like you considered all Islamists who would attack the US as "mad". Then again, I am not a native speaker of English and sometimes I do make such mistakes of nuance.
