"cases leapt ... largely because Chinese health authorities officially increased their count"

While that statement may be true it is also somewhat misleading. SARS is spreading very rapidly. Ten days ago there were only a few cases in Canada. Now there are about 130. One patient in Hong Kong appears to have infected over 60 people in the hospital.

We are very early in the spread of SARS and the rate at which it is growing is alarming - at least to me.

In Canada we had 3 deaths out of 10 cases - all deaths were apparently in diabetics, though. An alarming 5 of 10 patients had to be mechanically ventilated.

If this disease spreads, there aren't going to be enough ventilators. Without being overly alarmist, I can see at least a possibility of this being extremely serious indeed.

From an investment angle, the most reasonable play I can think of here here seems to be on the short side in the leisure industry - stocks like Disney, Royal Caribbean, and of course the airlines, although the latter are already so battered that they may not be the best play. None of these are areas I follow in the least, so people can feel free to suggest likely plays. Asian stocks have already taken a hit, but I'm going to be pleasantly surprised if this is confined to Asia for long.

This feels more than a little ghoulish, but if we are going to be killed by this bug at least we can maybe die a little richer... <twisted-g>.
