Wow- Russia is really hopping. Nationwide CDMA2000 network. Don't know much about the power struggle though. Anybody know whether GROS taking over is good or bad for the ultimate deployment of nationwide CDMA2000?

Malaysia awards 3G spectrum to Telekom Malaysia, UMTS

April 02, 2003 1:23 PM EST

NEW DELHI, India—The long-waited third-generation (3G) frequencies in Malaysia were awarded to two companies —Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TMB) and UMTS (Malaysia)—on Wednesday. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) assigned the spectrum to the two companies as the first step toward rollout of 3G services in Malaysia.
Five companies, TMB, UMTS, Celcom (Malaysia), E-Touch and TIME Sat, had submitted bids for three frequency blocks. After an evaluation of the bids, the government decided in September 2002 to award only two blocks.

MCMC Chairman Nuraizah Abdul Hamid said: “We hope we will see the first pilot coverage in July 2003, as promised by Telekom Malaysia. UMTS, on the other hand, will be rolling out its pilot service in early 2004, coinciding with Telekom Malaysia’s commercial rollout.”

TMB’s 3G services rollout is expected to cost 4 billion Malaysian ringgits (US$1 billion), while UMTS’ rollout is expected to cost around 3.5 billion ringgits (US$921 million) during the next 10 years, according to the business plans submitted to the regulator.
