Good point! After all, it was blind patriotism that fueled Hitler. Perhaps he thought he was preaching to the choir.

To be fair, isn't blind patriotism, or any patriotism, quite a bit like evil? It's what ever people think it is. Many people on SI are totally convinced real patriotism means calling other people traitors. On the other hand, people like you and me are equally convinced that doing that sort of thing is the opposite of what we think patriotism "should" be. I think what it all comes to down to what kind of world you want, and what means you are willing to use to accomplish what you want. The people who are "blind patriots" as you call them, simply have a different vision for America, and a different vision of humanity. You and I might think their vision is dark and angry- but those would be our value judgments- which like all value judgments, are shaped totally by our subjective feelings- just as they are over "evil". The vision of those with whom we disagree may be a vision that is horrible to people who like diversity, but that doesn't make it "wrong", imo. If the majority of people want that kind of America, then that is what we will have. Of course we have to hope that is not what most Americans want, and we have to try to work against it. Not because it is "wrong", it isn't necessary to go that far, but because that vision is incompatible with what we see as the most useful and productive path.

Hi Doug -- this applies to some of the posters on this thread:

Antiwar mongering

usnews.com

Many "peace" marchers, of course, are not anti-American, just antiwar. That's the point of all the news articles saying the movement has "broadened," i.e., pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. However, we should all pay some heed to whom we hang out with. Tom Bevan, a blogger at RealClearPolitics, put it nicely: "It matters a great deal who is organizing the protests. I don't absolve the `true' antiwar protesters for taking part in a march organized by American-hating groups any more than I'd absolve someone who marched in a legitimate protest of immigration laws if it was sponsored by the KKK."

And:

the denunciation of Bush as Hitler is a favorite of people who shout "McCarthyism!" when anyone points out, accurately, that the antiwar movement has been organized by far-left activists who defend Mao, Castro, Milosevic, the mullahs of Iran, and the Stalinists of North Korea. The reason Bush is compared to Hitler so often is simple: All the other recent monsters are heroes to major antiwar organizers.

And when the article says anti-American, it means waaaay more than just being Anti-Bush administration. And that should be pretty clear here just by some of the web sites that some of these guys cut and paste from.

......... and yessssss, I know, US News isn't exacly the most un-biased publication in American, it ranks right up there with "Parade" magazine, lol !

Take care,
Chris
