Buddy, I agree with your comments. Options are more tied to performance of the company, inspiring higher levels of production. It was this model that fueled the start-up craze from 1989-2001. Grants are useful for retention as long as they contain an employment contract. I do not believe in grants because they do not inspire exceptional performance. There was an article out yesterday that states that 3/4 of EBAY's reported earnings would have disappeared if EBAY had to account for options.
