>>Iraq will keep the US busy for the next 18 months<< To be more precise--until January 20, 2005, when the new president takes over.

Syria might be the next. and then maybe Iran

Syria will be ringed by the US and its allies. And Israel has overwhelming superiority over Syria. And Syria does not have the oil or the money to afford Dubya's democracy or freedom. So Syria can wait.

Iran will see opponents to its regime being armed and infiltrated from Iraq. Iran will have its hands full. It would be no surprise to see Iran's Russian-supplied nuclear reactors bombed as Israel bombed Iraq's two decades ago. After all, if we can invade an entire country under the doctrine of preemption, then what is a nuclear reactor or two?

Pakistan will be a growing threat to US interests. If they get missiles that can reach the Gulf then Pakistan holds a permanent dagger to US oil interests. I doubt that the present administration will tolerate that. Besides Al Queda and the Taliban are alive and well-supported in Western Pakistan. How long Musharraf will survive is anybody's guess. But the day Musharraf is displaced by the religious radicals, US troops will be reaching out to contain Pakistan's nuclear weapons.

Welcome to the eternal war for eternal peace.
