You are exactly right. Republicans today are very much like Democrats 40 years ago. I can only hope that 40 years from today that Republicans are not like Democrats are now.

Remember, though, that Americans have a notoriously short attention span. Today's military victory will be history by the time the 2004 ballots are cast. Then, the real issue may shift to the economy, and if it is still in the doldrums, don't be surprised if Bush is drummed out.

Why? Because more and more Americans sitting in the middle are tired of the Liberal vs Conservative rhetoric, and just want someone to solve the next set of problems. What have you done for me lately is their battle cry. If the Demos put up a Clinton-like middle-of-the-roader, they could give the Reps a gentle push out the door.
