Today ASML announced the first shipment of a full field 157 nanometer step and scan tool. It is intersting that it is called the Microscan VII. Microscan is the name of Silicon Valley Group's leading edge scanner family. ASML has received much criticism lately for the SVGI merger and it was reported that it discontinued SVGI's scanner shipments in favor of its own. The Microscan uses a unique patented lens system featuring reflecting lenses and, in the past, I have read conjectures that it would be the only tool able to support 157 nanometers. The facts that it is the first tool shipped and it is a Microscan, lend credence to the conjecture. If it proves true, ASML could have a monopoly on what is likely to be the last DUV lithography tool.
