Thousands of Dunams of Bedouin Agricultural Land
Destroyed in the Negev

Tsaher Rotem
April 3, 2003,
Ha'aretz

Planes of the Israel Lands Authority (ILA) sprayed toxic
chemicals on Bedouin fields yesterday (April 2, 2003),
claiming this was State Land. The Bedouin maintain
this is their land.

Wheat and melon fields were destroyed by 'Roundup',
a chemical used to poison the fields. The State maintains
this is an herbicide which doesn't harm animals or
people.

The area sprayed is is near the recognized Townships of
Rahat, and Laqiya, and east of the Bedouin township
Hura. Of this land, 2,500 dunams are inside a military
fire zone. The spraying began at 8AM and lasted for one
hour.

Gabriel Weisman, the Head of Southern Region of ILA
said, "We did what the Law allows, in order to preserve
our ownership and control over State Land. For several
years, the ILA leased lands to Bedouin farmers.
Today the ILA claims that Bedouin displaced other
Bedouin from their lands. (This claim can not be
substantiated by Bustan.). Sheik Jabar Abu Kaf,
the Head of a tribe where 1,500 dunams of land were
destroyed in the recent operation, says, the tribe is the
legal owner of the land.

Last month several thousand dunams of agricultural land
were destroyed by toxic chemicals in the area of Abde
and Ovdat, March 3, 2003.
