I don't buy this about Mao, nor Ho Chi Minh, nor Castro. They were all true believers from the beginning. Mao wanted to throw out the Japanese, not the US, Ho Chi Minh wanted to throw out the French, not the US. Castro had the right to gripe about US interference in Cuba's government, I suppose if you want to be a stickler. Cuba was sort of like Puerto Rico - not exactly a state, not exactly a colony. Some Cubans liked it, some didn't. Just as some Puerto Ricans want to be an independent nation, some don't.
