I'd still say though that their timing for this April Fool's Day presentation was off by at least a few kilometres. Actually, I wish I had been here to help out in the vigilance committee. I could have spelled you off from time to time to ease the tension on the home front. Kudos to those who served. Yeah, the formative years can be overcome where they need to be through later experience. My late father-in-law is a perfect example of this. Many of his earlier ideas of adventure, morality and such were created by the Hitler Youth Movement. He served as a Fallshirmjaeger for the entire war and came out of it a vocal pacifist. He was one of the first paratroopers to join up and was, along with one other guy, the only survivors out of the 500 who went through training with them. The whole idea of paratrooping in fighters at or behind enemy lines was very new and not many of them made it through. Alfie jumped with his rifle in one hand and a camera in the other. He left a shoebox filled with his pictures and our heads filled with his stories, he was a natural story teller, I mean he could have been Irish. Some of the pictures and stories are truly amazing. He was sort of the original "embedded photojournalist" My wife has been in touch with some old timers in Germany by way of the internet who had similar experiences and she is putting together a book of photos and stories with their eager help. The basic premise of it is how Alfie was a pacifist at heart who was forced to be a warrior, the old German gentlemen that she is in contact with (in German) are exactly the same. He was one of the most gentle men I have ever known, but he was good at the job that was pushed on him, he looks like a little kid in his sergeant's stripes but you know that he earned them. And hey, I get to do a bit of writing...alrighty. Maybe it's time everybody in the world gave their heads a good shake and started listening to the oldtimers...but not the old Ducks that we see on TV. Gotta roll...we're having coq au vin tonight. Happy Trails, Lenny
