You along with many others on this thread, seem to be stuck in the early revolutionary Iran rhetoric. I suggest you start by looking before and after that time span to get a clearer picture.

I have looked before the time span which for purposes of brevity and currency I started with Khomeini (his speeches and writings are still studied by Shiite islamists). The Shiite and Sunni versions of Islamism differ not at all in essentials with regard to their views on democracy and Modernity - the West in general.

You may have not notices, but Khomeini died long ago.

Read the parentheses in my second sentence.

Pakistan is and has been for the longest time a most pro-US regime

It's time you did some research on the recent history of Islamism in Pakistan. The government of Pakistan is ambiguously an ally of the West and much threatened by local islamist movements and its internal security services much invested by them.

Ditto for Saudi.

See comments about Pakistan.

So before you claim that fundamentalist Islam is not a backlash against too much US influence in those countries, you need to compare US influence vs. the popularity of Islamism in the Muslim world.

Fundamentalist Islam is a response to modernity whether it be from the West or from Muslim sources. It has a history of at least a thousand years: "Faith trumps reason" is its summary phrase.

So at this point I have to ignore the rest of your post

Too bad, that. You might have learned something.
