A modern Shia run state without clerics running things would tend to influence Iran in a positive direction. Kids in Iran chant "We love USA " to piss off the authorities and their parents.

Hi Kerry, That's why I said. Pretty complex. I'm glad it's not my job :o) Then again Turkey would never in a thousand years go along with the creation Maybe the answer to that one is who cares. You know if the Turks aren't ready to accept a Kurdistan on their border than maybe they are not ready for many things... The thousand years is especially cogent IMO. If these countries can't begin to get past their ancient rivalries then aren't we kidding ourselves about a Middle east solution ? I don't really want to see the status quo for the rest of my life and into my childrens' adulthoods. The stakes are too high now. Many countries are landlocked and while not optimum it simply requires good relations with your neighbours. Water itself is already an issue. Look at dams on the Tigris and Euphrates. Fertile Crescent is becoming less of a crescent. I think the Turks should be worried, but I can't say I feel too sorry for them. Aw! but NATO bases in the Middle East you say...
