U.S. Black Hawk Helicopter Shot Down Near Karbala; 7 Killed

Wednesday, April 02, 2003

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter was shot down in southern Iraq Wednesday, killing seven of the 11 soldiers aboard, Pentagon officials said.

The helicopter was downed by small-arms fire near Karbala, the site of fierce fighting between the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and Iraqi troops, including Republican Guard forces.

The other four soldiers on board the Black Hawk were wounded and rescued, officials said.

The four wounded soldiers were rescued by American troops, the officials said.

The Black Hawk was the second U.S. helicopter to go down in combat. An Army Apache assault helicopter went down March 24 during an assault on Republican Guard forces and its two pilots were captured by Iraqis.

The UH-60 Black Hawk is one of the Army's main utility and troop transport helicopters. Each one is flown by a crew of four and can carry up to 11 soldiers.

The full story is on www.snopes.com, type Colin Powell in
the search box.

The question in the "web" version was certainly dumbed
down, and the answer filtered to a sound byte.

I don't mean to pick on you, but indiscriminate forwarding
of unattributed information, well intended albeit, is just
one of the perils of today's Internet.

In the real dialogue, Colin Powell comes through as very
genuine, and exquisitely eloquent. Someone to be really
proud of, to have as a part of our government.

Keep up the good work,

fhatt

Hi Superwoman! I saw that quote the other day. Really, really nice.

Am so proud of our forces and leadership. Amazing. Fortunate no more casualties. Let's keep hoping it will end soon.

Heard today they saw the enemy troops being transported in school buses with kids. Awful.

Hope you had a good day. Beautiful here. Great spring day.

I have mixed feelings about the war in Iraq, and a recent profile in the New Yorker really skewers Rumsfeld, who apparently went against all military advice and cut land forces down to a bare minimium in favor of "shock and awe" by air, which has not worked the way he thought, and probably caused unecessary deaths...and anyway, I have no idea whether we need this war or not, whether in fact Hussein would give wmd to terrorists...the issues are SO confusing and we will never be able to sort them all out...

Nonetheless, I have to say, that quote by Powell is inspiring. How many Americans did we lose in WW II? We saved France, for instance. We in fact "saved" the world. We have messed up sometimes and we are an imperialist power but as superpowers go, we are an unusually generous one in many ways.
