I fear that the issue is even more fundamental.

Bush was advertised as a 'pro-business' candidate (as opposed to Gore, who was being painted as anti-business). So far, the Bush economic policies have been a disaster. They've had to fire the lot, but still seem to insist that tax cuts are the way back to prosperity.

What happened to the good ole Republican mantra of less government and budget surpluses? Screw the tax cuts; it didn't stimulate before, why would it now? People want confidence that the government fiscal policy is heading in the right direction, that it is not going to overspend, but that confidence has been shattered.

I guess we're back to Reaganomics, and its resulting huge deficits...
