I have been avoiding prefereds since they are at the bottom of the food chain in a default and don't have as much upside (usually) The risk / reward doesn't look quite right.

A number of municipal bonds are now paying at rates close to Treasuries. Just don't buy California ;-)

THe Yahoo TEI board has good discussion of high yield investments, like royalty trusts, prefereds, bond funds, mortgage REITS, foreign bond funds, etc.
