We engaged Iraq to fight Iran, our sworn enemy of the day, and we provided Saddam with some of the military where-with-all to conduct the war. We helped him to develop and use what we now call "weapons of mass destruction" and we declined to criticize him when Iranians were gassed by Saddam and later when the Kurds were gassed.
