Seems I went one further step: John is now accusing me, in essence, of not believing in freedom of speech for anyone, presumably in retaliation for pointing out to him that DeGenova's statements were no different than those of the Dixie Chicks.

Putting oneself in the public eye by making incendiary comments inevitably invites controversial responses--a point, in my opinion, which is lost on some academics protected by academic freedom and tenure, both of which are good things, as I've specifically said. This sometimes leads to "Who, me?" responses, and worse--as I am personally finding out.

My point, the cocoon afforded by tenure and academic freedom ends at the campus walls, where the First Amendment begins--for everyone--not just academicians who think their insights are superior by virtue of their scholarly training, seems to be deliberately ignored by John in his zeal to accuse me of not believing in freedom of speech for anyone. Twisted, I know, but probative of my point.

C'est la vie--no big deal.
