Oral, That experience deserves a stiff drink. You appear to be very fortunate (and a good driver) to have avoided a collision. Great job....

Weekend Forecast Includes Snow, Temps In The 20s, 30s

POSTED: 7:45 a.m. CST April 3, 2003
UPDATED: 10:07 a.m. CST April 4, 2003

MADISON, Wis. -- While northern Wisconsin battles an ice storm, the Madison area will be hovering in the 30s again today with possible snow. Many schools across the area are running late due to treacherous driving conditions, including Baraboo, Lodi and Wisconsin Dells. ( Full List )

Several counties, including Columbia, Dodge and Sauk, are under winter weather advisories through tonight. ( Winter Weather Advisories )

Jeff Smith's forecast for the Madison area calls for cloudy, windy and chilly conditions with occasional light rain or light freezing rain this morning, then periods of mixed rain, sleet and snow this afternoon with some small slushy accumulations.

Tonight's forecast calls for cloudy, breezy conditions and less than an inch of snow. The overnight low is 23 degrees.

The weekend looks good -- if you plan to stay indoors. Saturday will be cloudy with temps in the 30s. On Sunday, we'll be lucky to see 30 degrees, and be ready for some snow.

3 Die In Crashes

The onset of sleet and ice was blamed for contributing to a number of accidents.

In the fatal crashes:

Linda Thomson, 53, of Green Bay was killed after losing control of a car on a slippery stretch of Brown County Trunk B in the town of Suamico about 6:20 a.m., sideswiping a van and colliding with a pickup truck, the sheriff's department said.

Charles "Bret" Younger, 41, of Neenah died in a nine-car pileup on the Oneida Skyline Bridge in Appleton about 8:45 a.m., police said. Younger was executive program director at the YMCA Fox Cities and the former race director of the Fox Cities Marathon.

Two northbound cars swerved on the slippery bridge, leading to a chain-reaction accident involving two other northbound and five southbound vehicles, police spokesman John DeLong said. The victim was driving a sport utility vehicle that collided with three other vehicles including a tanker truck, he said.

Derek Smith, 17, died when he lost control of his car on an icy stretch of Wisconsin 13 south of Dorchester in Marathon County at 7:47 a.m. and was hit by a delivery truck, authorities said.

The Colby High School junior played on the school's basketball and golf teams and worked for the student television station.
