KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Telekom Malaysia and Maxis Communications will spend 7.5 billion ringgit (1.97 billion dollars) over the next decade to roll out third generation mobile phone networks in Malaysia, the industry regulator said .

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Nuraizah Abdul Hamid said on Monday that the introduction of 3G services will proceed as planned despite turbulence and uncertainties sparked by the Iraq war.

Telekom's pilot coverage for 3G will begin in July, with the service made commercially available early next year, she said at a ceremony to announce the plans.

UMTS, a unit of Maxis, will start a pilot service in early 2004 before the launch of commercial operations at the end of the year, she said.

Telekom's 3G network is expected to cover about 80 percent of the Malaysian population by 2010 with UMTS to follow suit four years later, she said.

The two companies were chosen from five bidders last July by the government to develop 3G networks, with licences priced at 50 million ringgit each for 15 years.

The government was aware that the rollout involved huge investment and plans may change due to global and local economic conditions but the companies had to ensure targets were fulfilled to instill public confidence, she said.

The mobile phone penetration rate is more than 30 percent in Malaysia and the government hopes to speed up the official target of 38 percent by 2005 with the 3G networks which allow speedy access to data and video through the Internet.
