They did blow up a few wells. Explosives were planted at others but not set off. They did much much less damage than they could have. Part of the reason may be the warnings which our forces blanketed over the area.

Hey, why aren't you addressing the issue I've raised several times. That now that the war has started and advanced to the outskirts of Baghdad, there are only two alternatives - victory or defeat.

Obviously, stopping the war now, withdrawing from the country, and letting whatever remains of the Saddam regime to retake control over the entire country would amount to a defeat for America. So why should you or anyone want that?

You've had a Don't Start the War thread, now you have the Stop the War thread. What's next? If the Iraqi regime is overthrown and the surviving leaders are captured, are you going to start a thread entitled "Put the Saddam regime back into power"?

PT, I don't think so.

I believe that the strategy had been perfect. If we have to wait for the 4th division to get there, so be it. The idea all along has been to decapitate the regime. The dominoes will fall when that becomes clear to the people of Iraq.

I still believe that the heads of state held the final call on the blowing of those bridges (all were wired) and oil wells. The Iraqi minister of defense was broadcasting that we did not in fact have the bridge over the Tigris while we were already streaming over it. The Iraqi regime is trying to give the appearance of control to the citizens in order to maintain their grip of terror over them. The Iraqi military is in disarray and has been reduced dramatically in their ability to defend themselves.

It is true that the goal has been to maximize civilian deaths inside Baghdad. For this reason, the US is not storming in there. The US is getting intel from Iraqis inside the city as well as our special ops guys. The coming action will be very interesting. I expect surgical hits to try to flush out the vermin. When they move, they die. The citizens of Iraq will facilitate the defeat of the Guerilla effort.

I also found it interesting that the Iraqis were able to flee the city yesterday. That had not been reported to be possible 2 weeks ago...

There have been obvious indications that the Iraqi civilians that are not afraid are happy to see the troops in there. There will be no resistance once it is clear that Saddam, the Republican guard and the Fedayeen are not a risk.

The brave gentleman that facilitated the rescue of PFC Lynch is an example of what we will see more and more as it becomes obvious to the civilians that we are in control.

The leading Shiite cleric declared a fatwa to not resist. That is enormous and again, very brave.

As far as your speculation of the US bogging the process in order to maintain an occupation, there is no merit to that theory. The US government has repeatedly said that it is important to install a responsible Iraqi government as soon as possible.

The intermediate prospects for the renewal of terrorist efforts will increase. What do you think will happen if a civilian elected government is able to show that the people of Iraq are happy and that for the first time in 20 years, the citizens are able to speak their minds and be individuals? Do you think then that the young Syrians, SA's, Yemenese, Algerians, Pakistanis, et al will still believe that the US is a demon?

The Saudi Arabian government might....

Another disgusting story on the news about a car bomb blowing up. A pregnant woman jumped out of the car screaming just before it blew up. Terrible.
