KOMAROM, Hungary, April 4 (Reuters) - Finnish mobile equipment maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE) said on Friday it was "well on track" to reach a 40 percent market share in global handset sales against 36.1 percent in 2002.

"There is a small recovery in the market...(but) our volumes will be increasing faster than the overall market," Nokia Mobile Phones Vice President Juha Raisanen told Reuters at Nokia's mobile phone factory in Komarom, north Hungary.

He said the strategic 40 percent market share goal was "coming extremely quickly" but declined to give a precise time frame.

"It will be definitely sooner than five years," he said.

In 2002, Nokia had a market share of 36.1 percent, followed by Motorola's (NYSE:MOT - News) 16.8 percent, according to a recent survey by U.S. research group Strategy Analytics, one of the main market research groups for the mobile industry.

The Komarom plant is one of Nokia's three mobile phone assembly facilities in Europe. The other two are in Germany and Finland, and all three supply the European and African markets.

Raisanen said that faced with increasing European demand, driven mainly by Russia, Nokia was expanding the capacity of its Komarom plant by 30 percent by the end of this year.
