The french and others think that this materialism is at the core of what we americans are. They are more clueless than the iraqis. The iraqis had reasons to doubt our resolve--ie the Clinton years. The French were witnesses to what our character is during their own liberation. But let them continue to misunderstand us--Let them eat cake. Mike

The character of United States is to accept commercial goods and minor elements of foreign cultures. But when it comes to bigger issues, we resent having our lives changed because of other nations just as much as they resent us.
