this debate has been replayed out throughout recorded history. there is always some "higher" level of governance that people both want and at the same time reject.

there is nothing new about where we are today, this is nothing more than the 1860 debate on a geographically wider scale. heck, europe deals with this sh-t on a daily basis, and has for nearly half a century.

in 1860 the states were virtually autonomous. in the original declaration the "united" in "united States of America" wasn't even capitalized, the declaration wasn't signed by anyone who represented The State, it was signed by representatives from thirteen "Free and Independant" States.

the parallel is as exact as parallels get.
