I have a friend who's an ardent Democrat. He was at the 1988 Democratic convention and listened to Bill Clinton's long winded speech. He thought to himself, "This guy isn't going to go anywhere". I remember him telling me about that in 1992, just as Clinton was about to be elected President. Hey, you never know?
