There was much doubt about the 13 colonies working together, and the central government initially was very weak. And even then, we had to go through one very bloody civil war to stay intact.

My optimism stems from the belief that eventually, there will be no other possible way to behave and coexist without self-annihilation. I also think it will take a couple hundred years or more to reach the full Oregon/Washington type of situation. The naysayers, as always, will die out to help pave the way to those who are not bogged down with walls. Americans will be dragged kicking and screaming, because we won't give up our standard of consumption without one huge fight. Our post-bubble mess will do much to change our expectations, however.
