Was Israel a country before 1948??? Yes, it was Palestine....

It was the British Mandate of Palestine, which the Brits gave up and left on April 15, 1948, the UN having voted for partition the previous November. The Jews accepted the partition, the Arabs rejected it, and sent five armies to conquer the lot. They failed. However, Egypt conquered Gaza and Transjordan conquered the West Bank, which they kept - no notion of an Arab Palestine then! But their occupation was not recognized either.

But you're right, the last lot to rule the territories with international recognition were the Brits. However, they are long gone.
