>>The time has come when silence is betrayal of the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Rev. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 – exactly one year after, to the day, he delivered his most profound indictment of U.S. militarism. His “Silence is Betrayal” speech, given at Riverside Church in New York City on April 4, 1967, denounced “a nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift.”

Oh my, Scott, you prance out the name of Martin Luther King to somehow dignify your anti-war diatribe. Martin Luther was a great man who believed in non-violent change. However, when it comes to the issue above Dr. King was wrong. I think if he were alive today he would say the "great experiment" of the 60's and 70's failed miserably based on the statistics.

We tried the "lifting" via handouts of housing and food stamps. What did that accomplish? More welfare and less responsible adults and a never-ending cycle of poverty. The real dream is for people to lift themselves up not to be lifted. I maintain that many productive and decent jobs have been created in the military. In addition, many young people were given the chance to learn a skill and gain discipline to succeed in the future. The military has led the way in recent years to promote minorities and give them a chance at the "dream."

For every soul that has floundered in military service in the last 20 years there are many who have flourished.
