No by "truth" X , Powell is standing by the administration's determination not to annex the whole country of Iraq as a sub-state of the US , and it would be rather far fetched to think that this will be what will unfold in Iraq . This is in truthful keeping with the past behaviors of the US , which on the whole has not engaged in occupying nations on any large scale , even after they were our mortal enemies. But all is relative to that extent , and in one's own opinion of national security matters following World & cold wars . I'll let you or others evaluate gemany and japan here etc. By referring to the past annexing of certain lands by the Us, for military prescence and the point of deterrence within certain regions of hostility , is not comparable on a relative historical scale of the imperialism of some other nations that indulged rather heavily and overtly in this for some long eras. But this discussion has already been done on this thread several times at least. So you have truth ...and you have "truth" , as Powell saw it , and you and I see it, and what is yet to unfold in the new democratic republic of Iraq, "in fact ". Which could very well fall under the implication by Powell and not your opinion. Though I think we will return our dead to our shores in the case of Iraq , so not to even use up their land for this. There is also a declaration of a timeline for the final resolution and formation of the boundries set for the nation of Palestine by our gov't (2005) But one could argue also from many sides that issue too , as to the "truth" of who constitutes an indigenous citizen of a land that has been somewhat nomadic since the times of Moses. But should we not make the attempt ? As I said before we will just have to see what is "truth " and if it fits into the framework of Powell's implication that once the new republic of Iraq is formed our prescence , as before will become lessoned and unobtrusive . Or your version of the projection of truth that becomes the reality as you have implied here. Our presecence in Saudi Arabia for instance, has been fairly well marginal and unobtrusive to that society and we have been there for some time , much to the Saudi Royal's secret delight. I see some eventual similar scale of withdrawl occurring in Iraq once the needed time of nation building is over.
