Poll Shows Dean Tied with Kerry at 21% (it was 27% for Johnny "Chung" Kerry--- oh oh --must be ketchup stains on that regime change) deanforamerica.com April 3, 2003
BURLINGTON, VT: Democratic presidential candidate Gov. Howard Dean is tied for the lead in a new poll released today by Franklin Pierce College. Gov. Dean and John Kerry, a Massachusetts senator, both received 21% of likely voters' support.
"I am extremely pleased that New Hampshire voters are responding to my vision for America," said Gov. Dean. "We need a leader who speaks honestly to the American people, and is consistent on the issues."
The Governor said the poll proves that New Hampshire voters support his message.
"They are concerned about this administration's borrow-and-spend budgeting, and want a balanced federal budget; they want a rational foreign policy that reflects the values of the American people; and they believe every man, woman and child in this country should have health care," he said. "With New Hampshire's help, I can accomplish these goals for the nation."
Gov. Dean has been aggressively criss-crossing the state, talking with voters about their concerns and how to refocus the priorities of this nation.
The Franklin Pierce poll, which surveyed 606 likely Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire, had a margin of error of +/- 4%.
No other Democratic candidates garnered double-digit support. Senator Joseph Lieberman, 2000 vice-presidential nominee, had 9%; Congressman Richard Gephardt had 6%; former Senator Gary Hart had 3%; Senator John Edwards and General Wesley Clark tied for 2%; and Senator Bob Graham had 1%.

KERRY: DAMAGE CONTROL Boston Globe's Black reports, Boston atty Robert Crowe on 12/29 resigned as chair of Sen. John Kerry's (D) camp. finance cmte "in response to negative publicity that featured his ties" to Kerry. Crowe, "a longtime close personal friend and financial supporter" of Kerry's, "reportedly decided that he had had enough of critical newspaper stories, sources close to Kerry said." Kerry, responding to the resignation which he termed "understandable": "Bob Crowe has done an outstanding job for me, often at the expense of his own personal life." Crowe had "made headlines" recently in regard to his role as a lobbyist for Boston's Big Dig and his work for a firm hired by the Swiss Bankers Assn. Kerry's finance cmte will be "'streamlined'" and headed by Peter Maroney who was hired by the campaign last fall (12/30). CHUNG CONNECTION? A Los Angeles Times article by Rempel & Miller reported that Kerry received $10K in '97 from Dem contributor Johnny Chung following Chung's "high-level meeting" with SEC officials, arranged for him by Kerry's office soon after he paid a visit there. A Kerry spokesperson "confirmed that Kerry's office contacted the SEC" on Chung's behalf, "but she said it involved no more than helping arrange "'a tour.'" The DoJ is investigating the contribution which Chung is said to have made through several employees and others whom he reimbursed. Kerry spokesperson Tovah Ravitz "acknowledged" that Chung was approached for a donation "'numerous times because they were nearing the end of a tough campaign.'" Although Ravitz said Kerry's office arranged a tour for Chung, SEC officials "said the request on behalf of Chung involved a briefing session" (12/24). Boston Globe's Zitner follows up on the Times story, reporting that Chung's visit to the SEC "was something more than a casual tour but something less than special access to high government official, the SEC said." Kerry's Ravitz said Chung made the request for a stop at the SEC during an 8/96 visit, accompanied by other Asian businessmen, to Kerry's office. Chung and the others visited the SEC later the same day (12/25). On 12/26, USA Today reported that Ravitz said the Times was incorrect in its initial report (12/26). 01/05 12:35
and the DOJ announcement:[snip] usdoj.gov The information charges Chung with violating the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) by conspiring to contribute, and causing to be contributed, funds exceeding the statutory limitations on campaign contributions, as well as conspiring to contribute and causing to be contributed funds in the name of others. (18 U.S.C. § 371 and 2 U.S.C. §§ 437g(d), 441a and 441f).
The information refers to two fundraising events, one a Clinton/Gore '96 fundraiser held in Century City, California on September 21, 1995. The second was a September 9, 1996 fundraiser for Senator John Kerry in Beverly Hills, California.
According to the information, Chung attended the Clinton/Gore fundraiser with approximately 20 guests. The cost of attending the event was $1,000, the maximum federal law permitted one person to contribute to Clinton/Gore '96. In order to pay for his guests without appearing to exceed the statutory limitation, Chung used a series of conduit contributors totaling at least $20,000. As explained in the information, he caused one of his employees to recruit conduit contributors by having them write individual checks in the amount of $1,000 payable to Clinton/Gore '96. Chung then caused cash to be withdrawn from his personal banking accounts, and had an employee reimburse the conduit contributors.
The information details a similar scheme to violate the FECA through conduit contributions to the Kerry Committee. The September 9, 1996, Beverly Hills fundraiser for Senator Kerry was hosted by Chung. The federal limit on personal contributions was $2,000 ($1,000 for the primary campaign and $1,000 for the general election campaign). Chung attended the event with several guests. As set forth in the information, Chung contributed $8,000 of his own money disguised as contributions from four of his guests. Chung and one of his employees asked the four guests to write checks drawn on their own accounts in the amount of $2,000 payable to the Kerry Committee. Chung and his employee then reimbursed the four conduit contributors with checks drawn from Chung's personal bank account. =========================== and great reading of Chungs own words in the House's Committee commdocs.house.gov COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENT REFORM

Serial No. 106–23 After these representations from Liu, I kept the money, which actually had already been transferred into my account that morning by Liu. I never had any intention to give the $300,000 to the Democrats, and I ended up following Liu's advice and used the money primarily for myself and for helping the General's son, although I did make some donation to the DNC that was from the same account into which Liu made the deposit. I commingled money from multiple sources into this account, and I did not intend for the donation to come strictly from Liu's funds. I also donated to John Kerry in this timeframe, but in my mind I had already obligated myself to contribute to Kerry back in July when his people arranged the meeting at the SEC for Liu Chao Ying and Mr. Yao. As I have said before, although I received money from many sources, I alone decided how and when to donate it, who to donate it to, and how much. |
