I believe that this would be political suicide for Bush and whoever succeeds him. Most Americans are very committed to maintaining a significant long term effort to eliminate / limit terrorism and promote stability in the oil producing areas. Iraq is key to these goals.

The Iraqi torture of our POW's is just another assault on us that started in my mind with the 200+ Marines killed in Lebanon in the 1980's. We are making sacrifices now for a goal we understand and believe in, liberating Iraq and establishing a representative progressive government. We are willing to do what it takes to achieve success and further obstruction by France and Germany wont be received well by the American public. Some countries may believe this applies only to the privileged, but most Americans believe it applies to all.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. --That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
